The Rise of Robotics: Automating Processes in the Modern Warehouse

Despite the long history of people managing warehouse logistics, there are few other industries where the argument for automation and robotics can be made so loudly and enthusiastically. Saving time, money, and the bodies of humans to allow for more technical jobs are just a few of the benefits of robots becoming integrated into the modern warehouse landscape. However, as with incorporating any technology en masse, robotics have unique challenges and drawbacks. Therefore, today, we will discuss the benefits, challenges, and the future landscape of automating processes in modern warehouses.

The Current Landscape Of Warehouse Robotics

Robotics technology is a rapidly advancing field that can fit into various potential fields and logistical operations. New technology inspired by autonomous driving vehicles allows robots to navigate warehouse layouts without the need for human intervention. However, they need not be totally independent as many robots can work alongside people to augment their efficiency, lower strain, and promote a safer work environment. Current warehouse robots are helpful in a bevy of different ways, including:

  • Autonomous Picking And Storage
  • Bulk Transport
  • Automatic Sorting
  • Palletizing Items
  • Packing Of Items

Five Types Of Autonomous Warehouse Robots

  1. Autonomous Mobile Robots: The most widely versatile robots in a warehouse, autonomous mobile robots, are the ones that take complete control over picking, sorting, and moving objects by traveling throughout the warehouse and are non-stationary like many other types of warehouse robots.
  2. Palletizer Robots: Palletizing and wrapping can be time-consuming and tedious for workers. These automated arms will place objects on the pallet and/or wrap them with stretch film. Depalletizer robots do the opposite order of operations.
  3. Sorting Robots: Sorting can be streamlined with the use of robots, which can be configured to sort objects by weight, size, shape, or scanning codes.
  4. Cleaning Robots: While the Roomba is fantastic for small messes in the house, cleaning robots keep warehouses clean and safe for workers, sweeping up spills or debris and reducing the spread of potential bacteria, all while saving the workforce from having to commit to tedious and often dull labor.
  5. Automated Labeling Robots: For large distribution centers, labeling is essential and a simple process that benefits from automation using a vacuum or adhesive for application.

Drawbacks Of Autonomous Robots In The Warehouse

While we just spent the past two-thirds of this article lauding the efficiency and benefits of robotic automation in the workplace, there are some downsides that all owners should consider before investing in such technologies. First and foremost, they can be prohibitively expensive, meaning that small or less profitable operations can suffer from implementing autonomous technology rather than an average worker. Moreover, robotics is an imperfect field that still has a long way to go before it is perfectly safe and efficient. Finally, while robotics will likely never completely replace the human component of warehouse management, when something breaks down, technicians for repair are in short supply, and the potential loss of human interaction comes with some societal implications that still require legislation and guidance to ensure that a significant portion of the workforce maintains their income.
